The Wonder Spotlight

The Green School in Bali

We are inspired by the Green School’s emphasis on sustainability in all realms as well as a systems thinking approach—always looking for leverage points to steer the whole system on a more sustainable path. For example, each individual’s personal sustainability is prioritized. If a socio-emotional struggle arises, it becomes the focus, teachers have the flexibility to clear time and other activities to support that person’s needs.

That flexibility is built into the school structure in other ways as well. Teachers have daily opportunities to work together and collaborate. The curriculum is never more than 70% framed out before classes begin, affording teachers the freedom to be opportunistic, improvise, adjust, and evolve. Teachers act as guides or coaches on thematic open-ended projects, weaving in any and all academic subjects.

The Green School values authenticity, striving to build a climate in which students can be fully, authentically themselves. Students are given a choice and a chance to showcase their interest through capstone projects completed during regular school hours. Students partner with local organizations on real-world projects, gradually spending more and more time out in the community as they get older. Every Wednesday morning is set aside for the whole school to engage with the local community in entrepreneurial service projects which originate from student, teacher, and parent ideas. The ‘wonder wall’ is always available, a public space on which to post and find ideas.

We are also inspired by the Green School’s integration of parents into more substantive areas of school life. They keep a database of parent expertise, frequently inviting their involvement on projects. They also offer adult education programs such as permaculture and sustainable building. The school recently opened a parent co-working space on campus.
